In Austria, your family doctor is your first contact person. You can choose your doctor freely. The family doctor treats illnesses, takes precautionary measures and refers you to specialists or outpatient clinics.
Not all doctors have a contract with a health insurance company. If you choose a doctor who is not contracted-in, you have to pay the fee yourself. Sometimes you get part of the money back from the health insurance.
When the medical practice is closed, there is a medical emergency service. The phone number is 141. Here you can also call at night and on weekends. Further important information is available in the chapter titled "emergency".
